DURACELL — Night Light

Some of our first work for Duracell was to continue their Trusted Everywhere campaign into the great outdoors. It was around this time we had read about a twosome of climbers who had recently free climbed an unscaled portion of the Dawn Wall in Yosemite National Park’s famed valley. It was a 6 year project that had only recently been conquered.

The relevant part to Duracell was that the two climbers, Kevin Jorgeson and Tommy Caldwell, had spent a significant portion of their 19 days living on the wall, climbing at night. Climbing at night was a necessity because of the heat of the day, it allowed the climbers hands to harden so that they wouldn’t rip as easy. It also made scaling the almost impossible climb realistic as even the smallest of holds were easier to spot in the light and shadows under the illumination of a headlamp.

We made two short documentaries for editorial content. One called “Climbing at Night” which explains Kevin’s reliance on the night and his light to conquer the Dawn Wall. The second called “Father and Son” that tells the backstory of Kevin and his dad’s relationship, and their joint love of the outdoors.

In addition to the photography and the docs, we told a narrative story of the relationship between Kevin & his dad, who fostered his love for the outdoors. Who like Duracell, could always be counted on.
